For Teachers
Bovee Science is a free collection of middle school science games built by a science teacher. Each game teaches one big idea through play, checks understanding along the way, and gives you proof of mastery at the end.
How every game is built
Every Bovee Science game follows the same structure, so once students learn one, they know how to approach the rest.
- Arcade games where the science is the gameplay. Students experience the concept first. In the Newton's laws game, for example, the first law isn't a sentence to memorize; it's the reason your astronaut won't stop drifting.
- A minimum score to unlock the lesson. Students have to actually engage with each game before moving on.
- A guided explanation with check-ins. The science is revealed one paragraph at a time. Students answer a multiple-choice question about each paragraph before the next one appears, then see the full explanation together.
- A mastery quiz. Questions mix the games with real-world situations and calculations. Students need 100% to finish, see an explanation for every answer, and draw new questions on each retake. A quiz can't be abandoned partway through.
- A certificate. A 100% score unlocks a certificate with the student's name, best game scores, completion date and time, attempt count, and an ID. Students screenshot it and submit it.
Standards by game
| Game | Grade | Topic | NGSS |
|---|---|---|---|
| Newton's Arcade | 8 | Newton's three laws of motion | MS-PS2-1, MS-PS2-2, DCI PS2.A |
Each game's page has a full breakdown of the standards it supports, a suggested one-period lesson plan, discussion questions, and key vocabulary.
Ways to use it
- Introduce a unit. Let students experience the idea before direct instruction, then reference the game during your lesson.
- Review before a test. The final quiz doubles as practice with instant explanations.
- Homework or sub plans. The certificate gives you a simple completion check.
- Friendly competition. Every game tracks a personal best. Challenge students to beat each other's scores.
Privacy and devices
There are no student accounts, sign-ins, or emails. A student's name and progress are stored only in the browser on the device they're using and are never sent anywhere. Because of that, students should finish on the same device and browser they started on. On shared Chromebooks, students can use the "Reset my progress" or "change name" options to start fresh.
Games run in any modern browser on Chromebooks, laptops, and tablets. Sound effects can be turned off from each game's home screen.
Teacher FAQ
Does Bovee Science collect student data?
No. There are no accounts, emails, or sign-ins. A student's name and progress are stored only in the browser on the device they are using and are never sent to a server.
Can students play on shared Chromebooks?
Yes. Each game has a Reset my progress link and a change name option, so a new student can start fresh on a shared device.
How do I know a student actually finished?
Students only reach the certificate by scoring 100% on the final quiz. The certificate shows their name, best scores, completion date and time, number of quiz attempts, and a certificate ID.
